About the Book

This book provides a lucid and stimulating introduction to the films of Marguerite Duras, who was one of the greatest French writers and directors of the twentieth century. This is the first book to appear in English that deals specifically with her cinema, presenting detailed analyses of her key films - including India Song, Le Camion, and Nathalie Granger - and focusing in particular on their experimental and innovative aspects.

As this study clearly shows, the cinema of Duras is an expression both of her personal experience and of her political commitment. The films are thus located within their autobiographical as well as their social and historical context. Individual chapters consider the relationship between Duras's work as a writer and as a film director, the impact of socialism and feminism on her cinema and representations of gender and sexuality in her films.

This clear and comprehensive book is accessible to a wide readership, including students and teachers working in French cinema, Gender Studies and those with an interest in Duras.
